Myanmar - Sustainable Development of the Mining Sector

Country / Region: Myanmar / Southeast Asia
Focal Point: Mining

Begin of project: July 31, 2015

End of project: December 31, 2022

Status of project: July 22, 2021

The BGR Project “Sustainable Development of the Mining Sector in Myanmar” is a module integrated in the technical cooperation programme “Sustainable Economic Development in Myanmar” that is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. Project partner is the Department of Mines that is integrated in the “Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation” in Naypyitaw. The overall aim is the improvement of the quality of mining supervision and operations with respect to safety, social and environmental aspects. The implementation includes the evaluation and improvement of supervision procedures, the strengthening of staff capacity involved in mining, and improved collaboration of relevant stakeholders in the mining sector on mining supervision-related topics.

The transformation of the mining sector towards increased sustainability is a major challenge. In its first phase, the project provide specialized, consecutive trainings for inspectors and mining sector stakeholders. A multi-stakeholder consultation process is planned in order to draft “best practice” technical procedures and guidelines which will also be made accessible to the industry.

The stakeholder engagement by DOM should be improved, and the communication concerning mining supervision with company and civil society stakeholders should be modernized.

According to the requirements of inspection practice, technical and personal protection equipment is being procured for the project partner.

The first project period ran until March 2018 and the second period ends on 31.12.2022. The total project budget for the three-year period is EUR 2.5 million.
