According to updated environmental-geological information for land-use planning, shortages in water supply, natural catastrophes (earthquakes, mudflows, etc.), structural damage caused by foundation soil and similar occurrences associated with enormous economical damage for the affected communities led to an increased demand from regional authorities, local governments and other state departments.

Information is required from general planning basics, such as deposits and vulnerability of groundwater resources, to specific questions, such as the suitability of the subsoil for setting up a domestic waste landfill. Concerning this, within the context of cooperation between BGR and SERNAGEOMIN, environmental maps have been created. They introduce a new instrument for Chilean sustainable land-use planning.

The implementation of the environmental information system should enable the integration of various aspects of environmental and resource protection into regional planning and urban land-use planning to contribute to the sustainable development of areas using the environmental information system.

Project partners are the state mining and geological survey “Servicio Nacional de Geología y Minería” (SERNAGEOMIN) and other involved intermediary organizations (Ministerio de Minería, CONAMA).
