The EU action plan for a coordinated policy of protection and use of the oceans contains a number of individual measures. Data from different sources must be combined in order to obtain a solid basis for further decisions. According to the Blue Book of the EU, it is important to establish a framework for decision-making and instruments of the maritime policy. One of the instruments is the collection of existing data and information, "which are stored in a comprehensive and compatible system, and made accessible as a tool for responsible decision-making, for the development of value-creating services and for the sustainable development of the oceans. This is a considerable undertaking with many dimensions; to their fulfillment requires a clear and coherent plan, its implementation will extend over several years" (Communication from the Commission to the European Parliament, the Council, the European Economic and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions. An integrated maritime policy for the European Union, Brussels, 10.10.2007, "Blue book", page 7).

In the trial stage up to and including the end of 2011 is limited to the northern European seas. Under the direction of BGR, a record is created in cooperation with the participating North and Baltic Sea countries, which converts the standard for the semantic description of geological units, which was developed in the project One Geology Europe.
The basis of the new record are the existing data of the IGME 5000 ( The 1 : 5 Million International Geological Map of Europe and Adjacend Areas , BGR , 2005 ) at a scale of 1 : 5 million , which fall by a review of the participating North and Ostseeanrainerstaaten be expanded . As a result, a harmonized data set is drawn up.
